I always thought that the aim of special effects in movies should be to make the movie as realistic as possible. This seemed to be the case with some of the older movies (i.e. Terminator 2, Jurassic Park and some other 90's movies), but movies now just seem to want to make over the most over the top scenes and do not even attempt to make it look real. Personally, i want to see stuff that looks as real as possible, not something that looks like a video game. What do you think?

I saw a portion of the latest Harry Potter movie a couple of months ago at a relatives house. It was a portion where Harry Potter is running away from a dragon. It struck me at that time that it was both the best unreal creature animation I had ever seen in a movie, and the best blend in between the special effects part and the "real" part.

Computer Graphics Interface (CGI) IS making special effects production team members lazy. Now that the whiz-bang efforts are easy to do, the focus on realism has faded.

Take the first Star Wars film, circa 1977. Stunning special effects made because the film's producers had to bust humps big time to create that sense of realism.

Moving forward to The Empire Strikes Back ( 1982); again: stunning special effects on how Yoda was presented and looked real...and again: it took massive herculean efforts to create this kind of movie magic.

Finally, we see Star Wars III: Chock loaded with ZAM-BANG CGI effects...all cutting edge special effects....but take a look at Yoda now: he appears more like a video cartoon.

I think Hollywood better take a hard look at this problem--which it's growing fast becomming: for if WE see this; soon everybody will.

I think the problem is that so many movie makers add in special effects that are not needed. things were much better when camera tricks and good editing were used. movies were much more real then. today, the only movies that make a bunch of money are big blockbuster super special effects movies. i actually know people who only go to see a movie for its special effects. terrible!

Well yes i have to somewhat agree with you! Special effects do seem as if they are getting worse! It seems as now that the world has computer programs that they can slack off and do stuff fast and not care about quality anymore cause they feel as if its easy to make something real! But back then they didnt have the technology we have and they wanted to make things look real so the tried much harder to make things look real because it was harder when now days its easy so we dont put as much effort!

I agree that alot of the scenes in the Spiderman movies and the Lord of the Rings movies look like glorified cartoons. I noticed in the commercials for Superman Returns that some of the scenes look fakey like that. I don't like it.
