You will know when you have your first period, because there will be lots of blood. Before you have your first period, you will begin to have discharge at times, maybe for years before your period starts. Sometimes it will be white, sometimes brown - this normal.

You were very smart to go to your mom, and your mom was very smart to give you some pads. Wear them as long as you have the discharge so you'll be prepared when the blood starts. Wish I had done that! I had discharge for a good year before my first period when I was 13, but I was dumb. I didn't talk to my mom about it at all! When I finally did get my period, I was just so embarrassed, I pretended it wasn't happening and just bled all over myself all day. UGH!

Anyway, don't worry about it. If you start feeling discomfort or pain, tell her about that, too. It'll probably just be menstrual cramps, but Mom might want to take you to the doctor for a little look-see. Yeah, it'll be kind of embarrassing, but it's one of those things girls... I mean, WOMEN have to get used to. The thing is to just remember that every female gets a period, but every female is a little different. Not everyone gets discharge, not everyone gets regular periods, not everyone gets cramps, but you might get all these things and more. The only way to be prepared is to expect the unexpected!

I just think you're really smart and mature, and you should be proud of yourself. :-) Congratulations on becoming a woman!

I wouldn't wear full-out pads if you just have discharge. I would wear just panty liners just in case, so at least you have some preparation. Pads are really huge and they feel terrible (at least I think so). I had discharge for maybe two years until I started my period.. do you really want to wear a huge pad for two years straight?

One way to tell if you are having your period is that you will probably have some sort of weird pain and then suddenly *Guuushhh*. My first period was brown (blood turns brown).. yeah that was really confusing for me.

No your period is when your egg falls and that's the blood, so discharge is just a sign it's on the way!

No! That's not your period!! You'll see blood in you're underwear. I was soooooo shocked when I did, that I ignored it! Big mistake! That's not your period, but you might get it soon. Be prepared.
