Because it doesn't contain any alcohol. Mixed drinks with soda or some other mixer are considered "hard".

cuz a long time ago they use to put really hard alchol in soda and now they dont so thats why they soft drink!

compared to booze or whiskey which are refered to as hard drinks. So a soda is a soft drink( no alcahol).

cause alchoholic drinks are referred to as "hard" drinks< like"hard lemonade"> so since soda is non-alchoholic..we call it a soft drink
