There is no typical age, it depends on the horse owner.
There will always be people who will put their mare back to the stallion 11 days after she has her foal and continue to breed her every year until she is too wore out to produce anything that is healthy enough to provide the owner with money.
I have seen 13 year old mares that were wore out from being bred to death.
I have also seen 18 year olds give birth with NO problems to fine, healthy colts.
It all depends on how well the horse has been cared for.

i would not breed a horse unless a vet tells you that, that horse isn't to old to have a foal.I personally would not breed a horse after the age of 15 just because your horse could have complication with the pregnancy.I have seen a horse at the age of about 21 in-foal the owner sent it to this lady i know to foal it out.the horse had to were a girt like thing to hold the foal and her insides up because her Musial and all had ruptured to the point were only her skin has holding the foal and all her insides. the owner were really dumb they thought the stallion was a gelding.the mother unfortunately had to be put to sleep because see was bleeding internally.the mare across the hall saw all of this happen and the next day when they went and took the mare from across the hall out she flipped out.she wanted the baby.the owner that had the mother and owned the baby at the time came and the teenager was loving on the baby and know one was watching her,she calmed that the mare that took the baby in as hers because she couldn't have any of her own said " that the mare kicked the foal across the stall " witch was hard to believe since that mare tried everything she could do to get to the baby. they ended up giving up the baby to the lady who foaled it out because the bill was so much at the time and it was just the begining.we offered the lady who foaled the baby to buy her and that we would pay all the medical bills, but she siad since it was a preamy and would never be able to be riden and the ladies brother wanted it that we couldn't buy it.know the baby horse is almost 2 years old and she is one spoiled little horse and is able to run and play like a normal horse, and looks identical to what her mother looked like.

all of the above! just as some women have no probs into there 40 and 50's some horses remain fit and healthy longer than others, but just because a mare stays fertile into old age doesn't mean that you should breed from her, Ive seen a very poor little mare age 33 put in foal, colt was healthy enough but finished the mare off, but most horse owners are more responsible than that. if you don't trust your own judgment have a friendly chat with your vet.

Depends. Do you have a brood mare or just a horse you want to breed?
I always air on the side of safety, so I would say stop at 16-17 years of age. Any older than that, you run the risk of injuring Momma and the young'un, though it is sometimes common to breed into their late twenties.

most breeders would suggest you wait until the filly has attained full growth. Usually around three years at least - this can be longer in some breeds. Horses with un natural hips shape or small hinds should not be bred as you will have heaps of problems with delivery. Checking with your vet is the best way to confirm suitability.
