does it have something to do with how many inches of cord you leave attached when you cut the cord? the cord is made out of a different material than skin so really how does that work?

Belly buttons are nothing but life long scars. The reason they are so differant, is that each healed differantly when the doctor snipped the umbillical cord. It has absolutly nothing to do with the way it was cut, or how many iches were left. the cord itself will dry up and fall off, leaving behind the scar we know as the navel.

Fetal development in the mothers womb has a large effect upon the scar we call the 'belly button'. Nutrition, fetal movement, mothers activities, and general health can be factors on whether our navals are formed in or out or whatever.
So, when you see that cute girl with the cute little belly button, you should know she was a beautiful baby! =)
