not sure how to get out of it, but to avoid it, don't use sir or ma'am, just say "excuse me but the line has moved"

What I do when in line at the store is say out loud "What is it about me that I always end up in the line for stupid people?"

I did this before--I smiled and said Oh, I am sorry... And she just smiled and laughed it off. I felt so bad. I saw this one person working at a gas station and I never figured out if their gender.

Just say sorry or just let it go. It's not your fault and you didn't really do anything wrong. If she looks like a guy, especially from behind...oh well...them's the breaks!

Misunderstandings happen, it's not you're fault, it just happens sometimes. If you feel it necessary then apologize and buy her some chiclets and smile.

Ha...well, you could yell...hey...there's Rosie O'Donnell..and point wildly. That ought to take care of it.

Don't say "ma'am" or "sir". Just say "excuse me" and then say what you want to say.
