It has been $5.15 in SD and CO since 1997. The cost of living keeps going up but wages stay the same. I don't believe it will ever go up in these to states. It may in other states as people have answered.
As for the person that said go to college, finish high school, and get a job.
The only reason why people want to go to college is to party, get drunk, do drugs, and have sex. This is what most employers are hiring. I have been looking for a job for 6 months and no luck yet just because I don't do this college stuff!!!

Most American workers make much more than the minimum wage. Many states even have minimum wages higher than the Federal law.
If you think $5.15 is a wage, you obviously don't live here.
As far as the Congress and Senate are concerned, you are absolutely right. Of course they will give themselves more money every chance they get.
Just like your friend, Saddam Hussein. Why settle for one palace and one solid gold toilet, when you can have 10 or 20?

Looks like it will happen, although I dont think its really a good thing. Why? Inflation. Not to say prices wont go up without it, but watch and see what happens when the min wage goes up. Most restraunts pay min wage and tips. Watch what happens to restraunt prices. Starbucks coffee is already high, but watch out when wages goes up. All of the industries that pay minimum wage will have to raise their prices to stay in business. So inflation will increase dramatically and in a few years we'll be in the same boat.
Everybody wants more, thats what creates inflation. When will we all just be happy with what we earn? Why do we always have to have more than our parents did? Soon a dollar will be worth what a penny used to be at one time, and a millionare will be just above the poverty level. We'll need computers just to keep track of our worthless money.

Isn't it easy to advise people, "go get another job.. get a college degree... bla bla"
lets see, a single mother with a kid.. sure she can get another job or a college degree. And you are going to pay for her health insurance for her and the kid? And rent?
Ever heard of something called disposable income? Without disposable income you can't have accumulated capital. Without accumulated capital you can't progress in life. If that poor woman is lucky she may be able to put her kid through school and the kid may be able to find a decent job. But that takes 2 generations.
If you think it is very easy to go from poverty to riches, I offer you a challenge. Give up all the money and property and assets (contacts phone #s, diplomas) you have, move to a new city where no one knows you, start with a minimum wage job and move up the ladder. Show us you can do it. If you can then we will accept your argument. Since you are so confident it can be done you shouldn't have a problem taking up the challenge.
If you can't do it shut your pie hole and fall in line.

Most workers make more than the minimum wage. Those that do not need to upgrade their skills and work habits to make themselves more valuable!
There are some folks who are not worth the minimum wage, and because of that, they can not find work!
