Originally members of a (northern?) Indian cult worshipping Kali. They were "thuggees", and characteristically killed their victims with a long scarf (also used as a head-dress). The scarf was thrown over the victim's head from behind, and could be used to strangle or smother the victim, or more usually, with a twist and a knee in the back could be used to break the victim's neck. A quiet quick kill. The thuggees killed for money, for kudos, and it's suggested for religious pleasure. Effectively pursued by the British Raj (though with great difficulty) they were eventually eliminated, but the shortened title "thug" became applied amongst Europeans to anyone addicted to senseless violence. That idea makes me think of many modern movies, and video games - and even skate-boards etc featuring skulls (the icon of Kali)! Perhaps one might say that in some ways we have a thug culture these days? I guess "progress" and fashion is largely recycling. We still have empires, would-be emporers, robber-barons, and priests, too.

Originally, a thug was a member of a cult that worshipped Kali, a Hindu goddess. They were the Thugee. This was soon shortened to 'thug.'

A thug is a highway robber who ritually murdered by strangulation, committed by members of a religious sect in honour of the goddess Kali. They knotted a silver coin consecrated to Kali in one corner of a handkerchief, to give them a better grip.
