hi, I personal think that if the referees made mistakes on purpose , it means the game has been "fixed", even during the World cup! anyone remember at World cup 1998 in France, and the final between the Brazil and France, and the final score was 3-0 belong to France. That was the finest example of how the game can be "fixed" . Cher!

There is no doubt that in this world cup the 'big' established nations have been favoured by referees. The statistics prove this, with Brasil, Argentina, Germany, Italy, and Spain receiving 101 more free kicks than any other team -that's a staggering 20 frees per team!!!!! Why? I don't know, but it has to change because in such a low scoring sport the referees too often decide who wins. I think there should be two main referess in a match, each covering a different half so that they can be closer to the action and have less chance for bias or match fixing.

RE: Quote "Referees are only human, and do NOT make mistakes on purpose. I doubt any have received bribes, and certainly are not biased."

I completely agree with what this gentelman had wrote.. These Referees are classified by the FIFA as the best in the world. . . I bet they are also watched and recieve points, as to see if they will again be a referee for the future world cup. Plus, being a referee is not as easy as it seems, they also need to be careful and make sure that the players are playing correctly and are not 'killing' eachother (figure of speech, you notice the way the players knock each other around)..
I just hope to see my favorite Referee Roberto Rosseti Again (he is very good!) : )
A big shout out to all the Calico/football/soccer fans !

Referees are only human, and do NOT make mistakes on purpose. I doubt any have received bribes, and certainly are not biased.

The mistakes rarely affect the result anyway, as the better team normally wins.

After ---> thanlannt <--- comment I would like to add:
4 years ago, 2002 World Cup, KOREA advanced to the quarter finals after the game with ITALY. The referee (Byron MORENO) did what no one else had ever done befor in soccer, and as a result KOREA won the game. Mr. Moreno was right after radiated from refereeing soccer again. NOTE: the World Cup was in Korea-Japan.

First, I believe some upper officers in the FIFA gave pressure to the certain referees.

Second, referees got bribe.

Those are only possble reasons.

Well, they're human. In short, that means they're subject to errors in judgment as well as nearsightedness, and they're not watching the game on live cable TV like we are (unfortunately!).

Actually, in the last game (Mex. vs. Arg.) it was the line guard that screwed up, not the ref. He got a little excited with the flag, apparently. Argentine fans upset over that goal-that-should've-been can tell him where to stick that flag, but they're busy celebrating right now.

Some referees could be bias.

for the same reason that refs will make false calls in other sports. they are partial to a team (bias), get paid (bribes), and sometimes want to ruin a team.

I think it is because they want to protect strong teams like Brazil
