We adjust to the new environment, just like life on this planet has been doing for millions of years. This may or may not include the end of the human race. If it does, I guess it was a good ride, right? Go Hummers!

Current estimates by futurists suggest that if the whole of the world used resources at the rate on America we would need 8 planets to support us - at the rate of British consumption we would need 5 planets. There may be disagreement about the number of planets but unless we reach a point where the world can all survive on the resources of ONE planet we are going to be in trouble. At the present rate if Asia (including India and China) continues to grow its economies in a rapid catch up with the west we are going to be very short of resources, and burn up all the carbon reserves very quickly - that will heat up the globe and dramatically change the weather conditions leading to growing level of loss of life - The Asian Tsunami and the Gulf Hurricanes are just the start.
The positive side of changing weather and geophysical activity is that there is likely to be so much loss of life that it will result is a dramatic lowering of the demand for energy which will slow down global warming. So perhaps the Earth is already fixing the problem itself. Getting rid of a few billion people will stop the rot and the survivors will probably think twice before repeating the same mistakes.
Of greater concern is Global Dimming - this is the result of huge quantities of particles of dust in the atmosphere which has the opposite effect of global warming - it is possible that global warming is actually balancing out the cooling effect of global dimming and that if we solve the global warming problem we will be plunged into another ice age.
Despite Dr B's head in the sand view, we cannot any longer ignore the impact of human activity on the planet. It's not a matter of saving the Earth - she will survive no matter, it's just that the Earth does not need human beings in order to survive - and if we don't do something now to modify our behaviour, the planet may not be able to support human life as we know it in the future.
