Last time I checked the body was powered by carbohydrates and lipids (fats), and to a lesser extent protein and even alcohol.

But ... no soul. Why is it so hard to fathom that the same chemical energy that causes dynamite to explode can cause muscles to contract and nerve cells to operate?

The "soul" is an old idea that explains how people can move around and talk and think and feel without resorting to biochemistry.

Our ancestors could not use biochemistry to explain this stuff because our knowledge in this area was minimal until recently.

Today people continue to use the soul explanation instead of biochemistry because ... biochemistry is hard. Souls are easy: They just do it! That's how God made 'em! Abracadabra! Problem solved: Thought no longer required.

But notice that the "soul" explanation doesn't actually explain anything: How does a "soul" cause muscles to move? Magic?

What is a soul exactly? An energy field? Some kind of supernatural unexplainable something? Wow, that's useful. And how does this supernatural something manage to think? It just does? Bravo. Oh, I see -- souls ARE pure thought? Indeed. Very clever.

Where was Terry Shiavo's soul when she was brainless and in a coma? If her soul was "trapped" in her body, how does a supernatual force get "trapped" in physical flesh? Isn't it convenient that whenever the body is physically broken, the soul suddenly disappears or seems to lose all its powers?

If Terry Shiavo's soul had already left her body (hence the lack of mental activity), then what made her body continue to grow hair and digest food and pump blood. Surely not chemical reactions!
