The Basics.
Before anything. Make sure that the screen you wish to save is the picture you want. Move cursor out of the way and close any programs at the bottom if you do not want to show them. A screenshot is exactly what it says a shot of what you are viewing on your monitor.
Press your "print Screen" key normally on the top right of the keyboard somewhere.
Then click on Start (bottom Left of Screen) button - programs - accessories - click on Paint.
Once paint opens go to edit (top of screen) then click on paste.
Screen shot will then appear.
Save image as normal (file/save as)
Hope this helps

Ctrl + Alt + Print Screen (Prt Scrn on my keyboard) gets you a cap of the active window. This is the same as Alt + Print Screen.
Print Screen alone gets you the whole screen's view which could show multiple windows overlapping.
You can then paste it virtually anywhere - word, photoshop, powerpoint, etc.
Peace!

Best and easiest way is to use Alt+PrtScrn and paste into Photoeditor that comes with MSOffice. Paint can only save as a bitmap which is a really big file format and it won't let you size or crop the picture. The other other display applet that comes with windows won't let you do anything with the file either. I'm sure there are some freeware picture editors if you don't have Office.
