It connects into the headphone jack just fine and the music plays fine, but is it killing my mp3 player? Will it short it out somehow?

well i do it to mine and nothing happened so yea

yes i think you can do that.
just hook the wire in to the outlet of the Mp3 player, after that turn on the power and enjoy

You can use any computer speakers with your mp3 Player...........
Will not do any damage to your player.........
I use Logitech x-530 5.1........sound's absolutely amazing!!!
