It is late summer. Out of a violent storm appears a Dutch ship. The ship's cargo hold is empty except for twenty or so Africans whom the captain and his crew have recently robbed from a Spanish ship. The captain exchanges the Africans for food, then sets sail.
It's not clear if the Africans are considered slaves or indentured servants. (An indentured servant would be required to work a set amount of time, then granted freedom.) Records of 1623 and 1624 list them as servants, and indeed later records show increasing numbers of free blacks, some of whom were assigned land. On the other hand, records from gatherings do not indicate the marital status of the Africans (Mr., Miss, etc.) and, unlike white servants, no year is associated with the names -- information vital in determining the end of a servant's term of bondage. Most likely some Africans were slaves and some were servants. At any rate, the status of people in bondage was very confusing, even to those who were living at the time.
Whatever the status of these first Africans to arrive at Jamestown, it is clear that by 1640, at least one African had been declared a slave. This African was ordered by the court "to serve his said master or his assigns for the time of his natural life here or elsewhere."
The grounds for this harsh sentence presumabley lay in the fact that he was non-Christian rather than in the fact that he was physically dark. But religious beliefs could change, while skin color could not. Within a generation race, not religion, was being made the defining characteristic of enslaved Virginians, The terrible transformation to racial slavery was underway.

5) It is thought that the first African Americans arrived in 1619, about 20 of them. Actually, they arrived not as slaves, but became indentured servants or contract laborers in Virginia. At the end of their contract for service, these indentured servants would become free citizens. This carried on for several decades. Slavery was created in small steps. By the 1650's, African Americans were being treated as the property of others, or slaves. It wasn't until the 1660's that slavery laws were enacted.
6) Yes, I feel like slavery never ended. However, it was just transferred to other races. As corporate power has increased in the U.S., the people doing the "low" work that nobody wants to do is now the lower class - Jews, Italians, Mexicans, Eastern Europeans (Caucasians), African Americans and other races do the work and, no, I do not feel that these positions are exclusive to one single race.
I agree with Rebel Yankee. I am white and I have just as many, if not more, financial problems as some "black" people. In Louisiana, where I used to live, almost everyone who was black was on welfare. Up here in South Dakota, there aren't many, but most of them have high-paying jobs. It doesn't matter what color you are in the end. If you're going to start asking for reparations and restitution for races that have been wronged throughout history, be prepared for almost every person in the world to get reparations and restitution. Black people are not the only people that have been persecuted in history, they just seem to like to dwell on their shadowed past rather than look to the future and become a stronger, more successful race.

You know, traveling to other countries can give you a better perspective on life. I believe with the other writer, in that all cultures have prejudices. It is usually prejudice against the people that border that country. Today, it is every man for himself. As a white I always felt guilty wanting to hang a flag outside my door, you were an extremist! If you wanted to go to an all white school, you hated blacks! After years of growing up in the USA, I always thought that it was wrong that Blacks created Black History month, and there was no White history month. I always felt as a little kid that was confusing. I think that whites are pretty current with the terrible past of the African people. Hellloooooooooo this means if you live in the USA you may be african decent but you are now AMERICAN. GET OVER IT and stop perpetrating hate as an excuse not to get along with your neighbor.
I say we should worry less about what color other people are and instead try to help the people who really are in need of help with charity.

I'm not going to answer your questions because they are worded in an non-objective way. But I will say that No current white people enslaved current black people in America so get over it and move on.
I fully acknowledge that lots of black people were treated terribly in the past, but by continuing to ask for restitution etc you're just prolonging the existing racial tention.
And affirmative action is one of the WORST policies EVER! Do you want a doctor who wouldn't have got into medical school without affirmative action operating on you? If a black person wants to get a certain job or go to a certain school than they can do whatever it takes to be qualified just like everyone else.
It's people like you that cause racism.

Give me a brake! How many organizations, schools, scholorships, clubs, etc are for blacks only? Tons. How many for whites? None that are even respectable.
No, I do not think whites are better then blacks. Some of my better friends in life have been black and you know what? They say the same thing I will say to you.
People who are into the civil movement are a dying breed. It is over with. Should people who practice witchcraft be angry and pist off at society as a whole because they went through 600 years of hangings and torture? No and neither should you.
It has been my expereince that people who try to make themselves an outcast get treated different and usually negativly. When your own race makes movies that completely degrade themselves and your own people make music that glorify greed, sexual prowess, and women being objects, it sort of makes people like you look silly for even trying to make a statement about prejudice. Maybe you guys should start trying to stop your own culture from degrading yourselves and you might have a better case, or more likely, people might start to look at you in a better light. Try working on the problem in your own kitchen instead of pointing fingers at the neighbors. Teach the mothers how to be good mothers and the fathers how to be good fathers. Teach them to have a little dignity and self respect and speak english the way it is supposed to be spoken. Get a job, get off the welfare and even go and get an education. Believe me, people as a whole think trash is trash, no matter what color you are. I know plenty of them in the area I live in, and guess what? They are all white and have the same problem.

Ouch, Ouch & Wow. Alot of deep hidden feelings behind these questions. 1. c 2. b 3. c 4. a 5. No
Depending where you live you will see intollerance towards different races of people because it was passed down from generation to generation. There are just as many prejudices from black people towards white people. There is no way to undo all the savagery of the past towards different races of people. All we can do is show through the power of example that we all can live together in peace and be peaceful with one another and treat everyone as equals. That goes for all the different races of the world. Not just white verses black. Your questions are load with racial intollerances. It is these type of questions that keep the discrimantion, intolerances and the damage of the past going on and on and on. Our world isn't perfect, we can only do the best we can for all people and hope that the people in power will stop the wrongs from continuing

Some black ppl are cool others aren't but the same is for all races. We are afraid of the stereo type that is out there about each race. Yes we are sorry for slavery but back in the 1800's in the north east irish ppl were also slaves and during ww2 japanese were put into "camps" cuz we were afraid of each other.
The rich white CEO ppl don't care about black poor ppl but they don't care about white poor ppl either so I would say the new racism is now against poor ppl.
Yes 'I think the should be something for decendents of slaves as long as there is proof of it. But I think it should be something like free college with free room and board so we can make sure after the reperartion has ran out that they have a chance to get out of the crime ridden areas and raise failies and start a new stereo type for black ppl. And do all that so they have no excuse live in such horrible conditions.

1. love all ppl
2.not inferior, just some seem to have the old chip on the shoulder problem and it surfaces in their everyday life and dealings with other ppl.
3a/c
4.b/ I have had a lot of experience with ppl who refuse to stand up and take responsiblity for their actions and the way they live their lives. I think that is what EVERYONE SHOULD DO.
5.no, why does it matter now? I wasn't there, the ppl of today weren't there, lets throw away the crutch , shall we?
no, if that were true there would be no successful african americans. I think most just use that as an excuse to do nothing great with their lives. A lot of ppl have come from far less than you and I and made so much more of themselves, than you and I.

5. Yup
6. I'm not sure that qualifies quite as slavery, which did end. But Jim Crow and institutionalized racism took even more time to mend, and is still mending. Slavery of this type IS over. Slavery of women as sex slaves all over the world is NOT. Research it!

in my world all people are the same. colors doesn't make a person and when you bleed, your blood is the same color as any other races. that's what is wrong with the world today, becasue every races thinks that they are more inferior then next race. if you go back and do your black history alot of the things that were invented were by blacks, but the whites took some of the credit as theirs. hell if you look back what kind of woman did the white slaves owner kept i the house, whether it was for cooking, or delivery babies, and even who was they having sex with. why do you think that we have half breds? no i'm not racial either.
