I am a very cheerful, self-sufficient, intelligent woman. I live alone and am away from my friends, family and boyfriend over the summer. I feel fine until nighttime, when I will often cry for an hour or two at a time. I'm putting too much pressure on my boyfriend and he feels guilty because he thinks he's causing my problem.

I want to know if I am manic depressive or just lonely?

You're depressed, absolutely. Not manic depressive, I don't think. Go to a psychiatrist - the SSRI family of meds are very successful in treating depression.

Hi Liz... When I read your post I had to respond. I don't see many people expressing feelings so similar to mine too often. I could describe myself the same way, except I do not live alone. I do have a very caring boyfriend. However, there are voids in our lives that cannot be filled by others. The fact that you live away from friends, family and boyfriend over the current season does simply indicate a situational depression - not manic depressive disorder. I don't know enough aobut you to make a diagnosis. Only someone fully aware of your current situation could make that judgement call.

In the meantime, maybe you could try checking out this website. I would look into Dysthymia. Again, it could be just loneliness. I don't know you personally. Just trying to help someone out :)

Sorry, the link wouldn't work.

Honestly, your just lonely!!!

After the noise of the day is gone, then you are alone and there isn't your friends, family or boyfriend around like you are use to.

Trust me . . . . YOU ARE NOT MANIC DEPRESSIVE!!! Please don't let negative thoughts like that come into your head!

If you have a TV or stereo, play it in the evenings when you start to feel that sadness coming on. Also, take a walk and look at your new surroundings so when you do meet up again with your boyfriend, you have something to talk about.

Your normal!!! I know it is hard sometimes, but you will be fine!

Good Luck!

Do you often display this type of behavior? Do you have high highs and lower than low lows within a matter of a few hours or minutes? If you aren't experiencing other difficulties, then you might just be lonely. Perhaps you're ok during the day when there are distractions, but cry at night because there's no one around to keep you company and you are alone. Try not to sweat it, you'll be back when the summer's over.

Unless you are not disclosing more info I don't think you are manic depressive. However, you could be depressed from being alone. Many depressed people seem fine to others on the outside. I would suggest talking to your doc and maybe trying an antidepressant. It'll give your boyfriend a break before you drive him to leaving and you can get some peace of mind. Good luck!

You could just be lonely. Manic depression is more severe than crying at night. If you're worried that it could be more than loneliness...talk to a therapist or psychiatrist.

I believe you are lonely. You need to find some new outlets. Go somewhere and make some friends, do whatever you have to, to do this. Church is a great place to make friends and find activities to join in on. I have been where you are. I am sure that is your problem.

you could be, but the feelings you appear to be experiencing my be anxiety related too...it is not easy to be on your own. I used to wake myself up screaming in my sleep...alone isn't easy, but it isn't permanent either.
