Folic acid 1mg, should be taken throughout your whole pregnancy. A prenatal vitamin is a very good idea. It has 1mg of folic acid in it. Continue to take the vitamin while you are breastfeeding too.

Continue taking at least 600mg a day. It doesn't hurt. Either way, if you are taking prenatal vitamins they have them. You may think that since the neural tube is formed by 3 months you should stop taking folic acid but don't stop. Folic acid at this dose is NOT toxic and passes through your system on a daily basis. Either way, be safe a take a prenatal vitamin daily. Remember, you are forming a live human being and that's hard work. Give your body all the resources that it needs.

My doctor actually recommends taking it until at least the end of the fourth month, although he believes that it is beneficial the whole way through pregnancy. My doctor likes his patients to take 'prenatal vitamins', which do include the dose of folic acid you need, as well as other vitamins and minerals to supplement your diet with. This is healthier for both the baby and the mother.

it is healthier for you and the baby to keep taking your folic acid. in fact my doctors recommended that i continue taking it after having a baby especially while breast feeding and throughout my childbearing years.

folic acid is essential in the baby's development and in your overall wellbeing.

it is also important to be on multivitamins, and essential fatty acids (omega 3--either fish or flaxseed).

the better quality of nutrients going into your body, the healthier baby will be and the better you will feel.

I think you're supposed to keep consuming foods with folic acids. They are known to help prevent certain birth defects.

Just keep taking it. It should be in your prenatal vitamins which you should take your entire pregnancy. After my children were born and I was nursing, my OB-gyn would have me take two prenatal vitamins a day to make sure I wasn't being depleted from the nursing.
