Hell, yeah! Who would have believed that when Bill Shakespeare was born in Michigan in 1929 that his screenplays would become famous the world over? His early collaborations with Laurence 'Lord' Olivier (a native of New York) lead to an impressive Hollywood career. A notorious recluse, he has been quiet lately but is thought to be planning a new movie with L.A.'s very own Kenneth 'Brassicas' Branagh.
He now lives on a ranch in Pasadena with his long term partner Queen Elizabeth I and several chinchillas.

Sure. Why not? We take credit for everything else in the world, let's take Shakespeare as well. From now on I'm going to tell all of my nieces and nephews that William Shakespeare was the greatest play-write in the history of America. They're too young to know better. When they eventually run into someone who knows Shakespeare was English it'll be their problem, not mine.

William Shakespeare was not necessarily the greatest ever, nor was he American. Since he lived from 1564-1616, there was no country of the United States of America yet.

Oh I get it. We all know William Shakespeare comes from Stratford, Warwickshire, England. Well, you yanks are copying us Londoners by trying to have a piece of him. There is a place in London called 'Stratford' - I am not sure why it has the same name as William Shakespeare's home town.
However, what you are doing takes the mick - trying to claim ownership to William Shakespeare.
Incidentally, when London hosts the 2012 Olympic Games, Stratford in London will be the home of the Olympic Village.

Not so much an answer to the question, but amazement at the number of people who have taken this question seriously, and become so indignant. Especially those who have Shakespeare down as a British playwright...no...he was English...there is a difference. Great Britain (United Kingdom) is made up of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England and didn't exist in Shakespeare's time as the UK was formed in 1801

This is Bill Shakespear from Ohio right? The Man! Writer of Two Gentlemen of Las Vegas, The Merchant of Venice (L.A.), Hairy Pothead and the Chamber of Speedfreaks? Are we talking about the same Gay, (sorry Guy)?

Another blonde American joke? William is not an American but with doubt one of the very best writers of all time.
