I have owned quite a few! If you want to rock out and riff like a crazy man Fender Strat, Paul Reed Smith, Ibanez all come to mind. If you want to play country or jazz Gibson SG, Gibson Les Paul, a Fender Telecaster and Ephiphone Casino rise to the top. Acoustics are Martin many good models, Takamine, Ovation and if you can get your hands on an old Guild you would be lucky to touch. Also it all really depends on what feels good to you. For example when I had my Fender Strat with it's thin slick neck, I preferred just to let the fingers fly through the riffs but for a more melodic playing ability- Gibsons have got that down. It is all what feels good and what you desire to play. Cardinal rule though is that to buy a guitar that is at or just above your ability. Nothing worse than seeing a guitar sitting in a pile warping away in a garage. If you are just starting or are intermediate- get one at that level-when you get better you will just out grow it like an old pair of Levis and move on to a more fitting one. Keep up the music-share the harmony because it is the answer to a world full of insanity!

Top of the line has to be Gibson, but I would say that the most-used may well be either Fender or Ibanez, which are much cheaper but still name-brand.
Gibsons are very contemporary guitars, with a very vintage, unforgettable sound, but they are soooo expensive...

There are many. It all depends on the style of music, etc. Then you want to figure out acoustic or electric. If you are going only with rock, then here are a few: Electric: Gibson, Fender, PRS, Washburn, Ibanez Acoustic: Taylor (I own a 714ce...AWESOME GUITAR), Martin, Gibson, Takamine, Lowden, Lanjeans, and the best acoustic guitar of all...Olson.
