my friend has a old Chevy Custom Deluxe. We just replaced the engine in it. Now when we try to start it, the wiring harness comin from the dash starts to smoke. What wold cause that?

There's a good possibility that the starter isn't properly grounded and the heavy current needed to turn the engine over is "finding" a ground through wires that were never intended to carry such large current. Check for a good ground from the battery terminal to the engine block.

Sounds like you have a short under the dash or hooked one of the wires up incorrectly causing it to overheat.The fact that you say you tried to start it(meaning it did not start)leans toward the incorrect connection theory.

You could have shorted some wires. Just trace back the wirings and see if one of the wires touched a metal part.

Check the small red wire on the starter solenoid.It is only hot when the key is in the cranking position.It could be grounded or on the wrong terminal.(some gm solenoids have two small terminals)

you have a power wire pinched or ground...soething that is supposed to be getting power is pinched or grounded which is causing a short.eventually leading to a fire...

a short would cause that but that is about all the help i can be with not actually looking at it
