Roofers use a big heavy thing that looks like an ice chopper on steroids and just go right down ripping them off in sections. Call your hardware store or Home Despot and ask them what it is.

You can purchase a shingle ripping tool for less than $12 at Lowes or Home Depot that you can "scrape" the shingles away from the roof surface, removing many of the old nails at the same time. The work takes some time but is much faster than removing by hand. Be sure to pull out old nails that remain or you will end up with holes in the new tar paper when you lay it down. Good luck with your project. Putting on a new roof is a big undertaking but satisfying when you're done.

Oh boy, do you realize what you are letting yourself into. That really is a job for professionals. I know it's expensive, I've had it done myself.
Be sure to secure yourself up there, sliding off a roof can be downright dangerous. The best implement, I've seen use is a garden fork, with a good strong handle. A shovel also works well.
You need to put tarpaulins down around the house to catch the loose shingles. Then a large skip, from your waste removal people, that will cost you too, but it's necessary for the volume of shingles you will remove.
Good luck, you will need it.

You can get a special shovel with a lever on the back and teeth on the front for removing shingles. A home improvement store will sell these. Cover the area below with tarps for easier clean up. If the pitch of your roof in over a 4-12 it can get dangerous. Make sure you take proper safety precautions.

Believe it or not, the easiest way to get shingles off the roof is with a shovel. Start at the top, slide the blade under the shingles and rip it up.
You've got quite a job ahead of you!

i have done roofing for 20yrs,use a square shovel if it is just one layer you are taking up,it will pull up all the nails to .do not take up the old felt it is already laying flat with no bubbles so you won;t have lumps under your new roof.don;t worry about the nail holes in the old felt ,because if water gets under the new shingles it will leak any way.all the felt is for is to keep the shingles from sticking to the decking.hope this helps!!!

Try a pitch- fork. It allows you to pry up the shingles wthout getting caught on the nails. They also make a special shovel to remove shingles as well.
I would also invest in some halogen lights and do it at night. haha
The heat is a killer!!

I think using a flat shovel works best. Or one of those edgers.

Just keep on taring! If you're rich then hire some one, but if you're not then just keep on doing what you're doing.
