Living things need to grow and reproduce. To do this, they need to transform one form of matter into another, which requires energy. The biggest supply of energy to life on Earth comes from the Sun. Thus, most living things on Earth need sunlight, whether directly (plants) or indirectly (animals that eat plants).

Some living things do not need energy from the sun, though. All they need is heat and a special mix of chemicals that store the energy made by the heat. These can be found deep in the ocean near cracks in the earth, which let the heat out. This heat comes not from the sun, but because some rare atoms are slowly falling apart deep in the center of the earth. Life uses this energy too, where it is dark and there is no sunlight.
