the sequence is 1+4=5, 5+12=17, 17+36=53, 53+108=161, 161+324=485, so 3*n+a=b

Diff. bet. 5 &17 = 12; 3 times 4
Diff. between 17 & 53 = 36, 3 times 12
Diff. Bet. 53 & 161 = 108, 3 times 36.
In short, the next number = the previous number in the sequence + 3 times the previous difference
(n+1) = n + 3d
the next number in the sequence must be 161 + 3 times 108
= 161 + 324
= 485
