Did you find this movie dismal or romantic. Please explain. How does it compare to book?

the one with ralph fiennes is incredibly depressing. he treats all the catherines in the novel badly and it's disheartening to see all the characters spiral into despair. obviously the movie cannot compete with the poignancy of the novel but it stayed accurate to the plot.

I've seen several movies done. The original black & white is still the best. So, so sad. Romantic but sad. It follows the book pretty good. I'm a sucker for the old style of flimmaking... shadows, camera angles, fades... mood enhansers. I think it was summer of 2004 that MTV did a "modern version" of it. Different but good. The story is so timeless. If you don't appreciate the Regency style of romance... it could be a bit dry.

I think it was more tragic. I watched it twice with my daughter for a class she was taking. Then read the book.
Whata tragic tale of pride, love lost, love desired but out of reach. Was there a happy character in the story?
The movie was good, but the book as usual gave MUCH more detail and insight into the true feelings of the characters.

it was a movie ( with Laurence Oliveri and Merle Oberon) done in very good taste, a sign of it's time.
