I think it has something to do with being a fan of a certain style of music but beyond that I'm lost.

It's also a fashion statment.
Like goths were a few years ago and punks when I was a teen.
It's a fad just like anything else.

EMOtional i guess. just listen to the song Emo Kid by adam & andrew. itll pretty much tell ya. they wear black, obsessed with death, cut thier wrists, and act all dark

nope it means emotional, emo is for short. So u usually get depressed and gothic.
