If the music is copyrighted and the place you download from or you yourself do not have a license (permission) to copy it, you are engaged in an illegal act, and in aiding a criminal act. Copying it further onto your MP# is a separate violation.

If you don't leave a trail and don't share the file, and don't try to make money from it, chances are small anyone will go after you, but it's hard not to leave a trail of some kind.

Be sure to thank the filesharer as you go to court. Not to mention the other people here who said it was legal.

I'm not a lawyer and don't pretend to be, but my understanding is that it is technically NOT illegal if you have previously purchased the music in another format (CD, LP, etc.) - as the fair use clause allows you to convert to other formats for your own personal use. Say for example you only had a casette player in your car, you could make a copy of a CD that you have purchased onto a tape to play in your car.

It is, however, a violation of copyright laws to download any copyrighted material (music, movies, software, etc.) that you have not previously purchased. In some cases it may still be illegal to download material you have purchased, depending on the interpretation of the copyright laws, fair use clause and the license agreement of the copyrighted material.

Yes it is illegal. If you didnt purchase the music, you are not entitled to "own" it and play it at your leisure.
Just like software, you can pay for it, use it and re use it on the same computer but cannot transfer it to someone else unless you also transfer the machine it is on such as giving someone your Ipod or computer.

Pretty much, since your not paying royalties for using the music, and most of the music on file sharing networks is copyrighted, it is a form of stealing, yes.
