I wouldn't call it shutting down I just see it as being a person that doesn't likes to argue.Or they are just being the more mature one in the situation.

It's sometimes easier to shut down or act as if the problem doesn't exsist than to deal with it. When an argument is happening, there is usually a lot of emotion involved. Some people are just not very good with emotions and try to avoid strong emotions at any cost. I think that arguing is a part of every healthy relationship. I think that you should talk to her sometime about it in a calm manner.

People act differently during arguments.Some people practically kill each other, while others just blow it off.Maybe, as a child, she saw an abusive relationship.Just a thought.She probably dosen't see the point in arguing.But you need to explain to her that arguing is actually better than shutting it all in , as long as it dosen't turn into a fight.Talk to her and tell her you want her to open up and tell you how she is feeling instead of bottling it all inside....which eventually it will blow up.

Maybe she feels like you belittle her during an argument, or that no matter what she says you still don't see her side of things.
Think about that, arguments are supposed to lead to a compromise. It's not about "winning." Look at the situation from her perspective and maybe she'll be more willing to open up.

It all depends on personality and temperament. Personally, I also find it easier to shut down just because I dislike confrontation.

Could be because she recognizes that it's easy to loose your temper during an argument and easy to say things you wish later that you hadn't said.
I find it easier to think rationally and present a cogent discussion if I take time to think and present my position when I'm calm... later.

i love arguing back but it is easier the shut down cause then they won't argue back n then u won't be in a huge massive fight...arguing makes it worse cause u want to be right but Wat if u r wrong...then u will feel so embarrassed and guilty.
