"Suzuki, why do they have him put Ichiro instead of Suzuki on the back of his jersey?"
It's very similar to Yao Ming, and why he wears Yao on the back of his jersey, instead of Ming. In the Japanese custom, his name is actually Suzuki Ichiro, just as Yao's name is Ming Yao in the Traditional Chinese custom ways. In English, the names are flipped around, but they represent their countries by wearing their names as they were given at birth.
