I am 39 and I have a 16 year old daughter who has a myspace along with all of her friends and her cousins. I created one for myself to keep an eye on her and her buddies and my sister is livid that I would hone in on her 14 year old daughter's fun. Am I wrong for wanting to keep an eye on things and make sure that nothing bad happens?

I appreciate all the answers but I want to see if it would make any difference if I didn't trust my daughter? She and her friends and my nieces have accepted my frien invitation but only my youngest sister has a problem with it. She says she trusts her daughter completely and I should lighten up on mine.

You need to tell your sister to take a hike and be a responsible parent and watch over HER daughter....
Thats just being a good parent and Trying to keep your child safe from the freaks, geeks, and predators out there in netland....
I applaud you for being diligent and concerned....Parents need to step up to the plate like you have and police their children!!!
Good JOB!

No, you're not wrong. I have seen so many scary reports related to Myspace concerning old men and young teens. As a mother, you have the right to protect your child. Still maintain an open communication with your daughter and her cousins as I'm sure that is the most effective way to deter anything developing into a dangerous situation.

Ignore your sister cause so many kids get caught on the net by people who are not looking to really be their friend. It has been happening too often- people are misrepresenting themselves ( besides it happens to adults too).
Don't tell your friend unless you suspect that the information will keep her child out of harms way.
you know the myspace pages contain so much personal information it seems much easier to gain the trust of someone unknowlegable of the "real world", like a child- just by feeding back certain information- like saying you enjoy the same music or movies may make the child believe that they really have a friend.
I understand, you want to give your teen-ager a little freedom but you still don't want them to be influenced or caught off guard by someone who is really not who they represent on these types of sites or for that matter just to keep an eye on her to make sure she is not becoming influenced to use drugs or have sex by her real friends from school or such.
If I were you I would keep on spying- good job mom- keep up the good work.

As a teen, I don't think so. I *despise* MySpace, though, so take this w/ a large grain of salt. I can appreciate where you're coming from, but remember that your daughter desires privacy. Say that you are not "spying", you are simply trying to keep her safe from the scum of the world.

No, just don't overprotect. It's one thing to keep on eye on her but everyone needs some privacy. My mom was the same way - and now I'm glad she was.

No. Kids are stupid and are swayed easily. Hone all you want! I did a lot of dumb things as a kid and I wish I had a parent who honed!

tell your sister to chill ......... nothing wrong with wanting to make sure your daughter isn't putting herself at risk on a website that has so much traffic ..... cuz only takes 1 sweet-talking pervert to possibly sway her into activities you wouldn't approve.

Absolutely not! Too much of American parents are p.u.s.s.y footin' around their kids and letting them run the show. There aren't enough parents who care enough to keep an eye and if they have nothing to hide then why are they worried about it?...............
