Cultural Anthropology is a major division of anthropology that deals with the study of culture in all of its aspects. In the present day society the study of culture has assumed pre-eminence because of increasing level of intolerance among different races, religious groups and nations. Terrorism, ethnic cleansing, homicide, hatred etc is the end product of this intolerance.

In this context study of culture is most important as it will help in understanding cultural diversities. Researchers in this field have succeeded in exposing racial myths and ethnocentrism. Anthropologists with the concept of cultural relativism have proved that each culture is valid in its social setting. These results will help people to appreciate each others culture and promote peace and harmony in our planet.

Last year, I toured Italy and I was awestruck. Pompeii took my breath away. It doesn't change who I am today but I touched the stones that men made buildings out of. I sat on a bench made of stone and tile that was set before 79 a.d., I walked on roads men, women and children walked on, how can you not sit in wonder that 2000 years ago people were so civilized? I think of them, their lives and how simple or how complex they might have been...that's why it's important - who are we? where have we been and where are we going. Wow, it's overwhelmingly fascinating!
