I went to Dunhams ( a sports store)... I saw AK47s and M16s in thier gun display cases, for sale!!

Even if your for guns, does anyone else find this a bit disturbing/crazy that you can legally buy these?

Tell me your thoughts! thanks

Do you need an automatic weapon with a 30 round clip to kill a deer?

From what I heard about it being in the constitution... The constitution (with the right to be armed) specifically talks about the right for state militas to be armed (in a time when there was no federal government)...

Not saying I disagree with being allowed to own a firearm...

Just I think some of these firearms go a bit above and beyond personal protection

No they don't function the same!!! You can buy fully automatic weapons in the US, with an extremely invasive background check that exceeds what it takes to work in nuclear weapons labs & signing a consent for federal agents to search any property in your name or that they can associate with you in order to inspect storage conditions of any weapon you may own, plus of course a significant fee.

The weapons you saw LOOK LIKE m16s or AK47s. The M16 actually would be the civilian AR15 version, and the AK47 typically available in the US is imported & significantly modified so that it is semi-automatic & difficult (not to mention highly illegal) to modify back to fully automatic.

That said, you don't need weapons like this for home defense or hunting, and generally they are not very good for either one. However, a lot of people like to see what the weapons used by soldiers are like. That's fine, if they want to spend 2500-3000 dollars to shoot what aren't the best guns available anyway then what do you care?

As far as WHY guns should be available, you do have to understand WHY that clause is in the constitution. The founders had just been thru a war where it was necessary for the population to rise up & overthrow an oppressive govt by violent means. They wanted the public to own weapons as a check/balance against the US govt becoming the oppressive thing the British had been. Now obviously the world has changed somewhat & I'd be fairly worried if you could go out & buy anti-tank missles, but the point of the constitutional provision still prevents swift police state like tyranny by the govt, and that's a good thing.

You saw semiautomatic copies of these rifles. I fail to see what the problem is since semi autos have been available for almost 100 years now. The gun isn't the problem and never has been, it's those few people with a blatant disregard for the law and human life that we need to be concerned about.

Are you disturbed about the fact that you can legally buy a car capable of doing more than 100 miles per hour ? Isn't it a bit crazy that we allow people under the age of 30 to buy or possess high performance automobiles ? After all statistically this is the age group far more likely to get into illegal street races and kill themselves and innocent bystanders.

Those that shoot aren't that different from people that want supped up cars. Full-auto weapons aren't much different than a car that uses nos. The thing is law abiding gun owners don't have any intent on breaking the law. the same can't be said about street racers.

That gun display do you know if they were full-auto or semi auto. Chances are they are just semi auto if they are for sale, because it will take upwards of a year for a person to get their class 3 stamp from the feds (which violates the constitution by the way).

Even if they are full auto the background check a person goes through for the class three stamp is about as intense as an FBI agent goes through.

Why do people keep asking that same silly question? Do you really need a 30 round magazine to kill a deer? One has nothing to do with the other. Large capacity magazines are for target shooting, usually ten rounds, or larger for self defense. Obviously the bad guys use them too. Why does a stranger who doesn't know me, or anything about guns decide what kind of gun I "need"?
Further more, Those guns in the store are not automatic, they are semi-automatic. There is a big difference.

First of all what are you geting in a tissie over? These guns do the same thing as Grand pa & his 30-30. I'm not disturbed a bit. Most are used by military arms collectors such as myself. Others use Ar15's in high power target shooting and other sports. Most are no more dangerous or powerful then other sporting arms. THey just look more fearsome than a blue steel and wood M1 Garand. Yet that M1 carries 8 rounds of 30-06 and will out shoot a AK out to 800 yds. Some like fast cars, some like trophy wives. And some of us like big guns. To each their own.........

The guns that you saw were copies of fully automatic weapons. They are semi autos exactly like many hunting guns. The fact that they look like something that they aren't is deceptive.

So? Why does the thought of a law-abiding citizen owning whatever type of gun they want make you uncomfortable? It's not like criminals are walking into these stores and buying them. They get them off the black market.

No, I don't find it disturbing at all. I believe in a right to self-defense. Since we know that criminal gangs will acquire these weapons whether or not they are illegal, the average citizen, in order to exercise his/her right to self-defense, must also be allowed access to these weapons. The right to self-defense necessarily must entail the right to own at least as much firepower as those who might pose a threat to you.

I do, however, find hoplophobes rather disturbing.

well, if we couldnt legally own them, then the only people that would own them would be criminals. these guns will bring down a deer as easily as a human, for the most part, and ak's are cheap and decent guns.
