you can prevent further cramps by stretching more often, which is part of exercise. my mom tells me to stand flat on my feet when i get leg cramps. pounding at your calves or thigh might help, just not too hard or soft. some people have cramps because they lack magnesium.
Food sources
Green vegetables such as spinach provide magnesium because the center of the chlorophyll molecule contains magnesium. Nuts, seeds, and some whole grains are also good sources of magnesium.
Although magnesium is present in many foods, it usually occurs in small amounts. As with most nutrients, daily needs for magnesium cannot be met from a single food. Eating a wide variety of foods, including five servings of fruits and vegetables daily and plenty of whole grains, helps to ensure an adequate intake of magnesium.
The magnesium content of refined foods is usually low. Whole-wheat bread, for example, has twice as much magnesium as white bread because the magnesium-rich germ and bran are removed when white flour is processed. The table of food sources of magnesium suggests many dietary sources of magnesium.
Water can provide magnesium, but the amount varies according to the water supply. "Hard" water contains more magnesium than "soft" water. Dietary surveys do not estimate magnesium intake from water, which may lead to underestimating total magnesium intake and its variability.
Too much magnesium in the diet can make it difficult for your body to absorb calcium. On the other hand not enough magnesium can lead to irregular heartbeats, high blood pressure, insomnia and muscle spasms.
Following are some foods and the amount of magnesium in them:
spinach (1/2 cup) = 80 milligrams (mg)
peanut butter (2 tablespoons) = 50 mg
black-eyed peas (1/2 cup) = 45 mg
milk: low fat (1 cup) = 40 mg
The U.S. RDV/RDA is 400 mg of Magnesium.

Ok, I know this sounds a little weird, but try bengay cream on it. Rub it on the area, it feels really really weird, but it works! You have to get the menthalated kind though, the regular kind doesn't work. Trust me on this one, I don't like taking a lot of medications either, I got tired of having to take pills every day of my period. This does work.
If you feel like you HAVE to take a med, try aleve, it works all day with just one or two pills, vs like the four or more of tylenol or advil.

Take a hot bath as hot as you can stand it, and put lots of lavender and chamomile (essential oils). That usually works for me. The heat relaxes the muscles and the oils are good for all around well being as well as calming and relaxing not to mention it smells really good.....Just a suggestion, hope it helps

Drink fluids that has some salt content. Gatorade, Powerade or water with some salt added. Cramps is due to dehydration and loss of salt content.

I used to use a hot water bottle. A heating pad would do. Heat, couple of aspirin, and a nap always worked for me.
