I'll repeat was once mentioned above, and that is that it really isn't marketed well here in the States. Add on top that it is a lower-scoring, more tactical game than the major sports here.
Though I'm still kinda young, I've been a fan for a number of years - since at least the 1998 WC. And honestly, the team we had this year was still way ahead of the talent we had all of 8 years ago. The "shock" from the 2002 WC really set the bar high for this year, and we went up against a very tough group. When it came to crunch-time, they unfortunately didn't play up to snuff. I'll actually probably become even more interested in the US national team over the next 4 years than I have in the past. We have a lot of good, young talent, and may be poised for a strong run in 2010.
But, for now, with the US out, I'm pulling for the Oranjen - Go Netherlands!

I think that Americans do try, but the nature of the American psyche and society is completely anti-football (soccer).
Football is a game of strategy and patience. Patience not only at the game level but especially at the international level. You have to wait four whole years just for the championship tournament. Look how many decades some teams have waited and still have such little success!
The United States is an totally materialistic, "instant gratification" self-centred society. They can't wait four minutes for something they want, let alone four years, or forty!
They want stuff to entertain them now! right now! Not in 5 minutes or 10! Look at the sports they love: basketball scores - 119 to 102. They are scoring points every 2.7 seconds. NFL football - 43 to 27, got to keep the customer satisfied, right! Actually NOT satisfied, CONSTANTLY satisfied!
Now compare that to the sports that Americans generally can't stand. Football (soccer) 1 to 0, 1 to 1. Ice hockey, 2 to 1, 3 to 2. To use J. Leno's words (as well as Homer Simpson's) describing hockey and soccer, "booooooorrrrrriiiinnnnggg!

Soccer isn't an American sport. BUT the vast majority of soccer fans and supporters in the US are immigrants or from immigrant decent. I'm Argentine/American and play and support the sport. The USA soccer team has little skill and the reason they get the recognition they get is because of lucky flukes. For example, throughout our journey to Germany we scored only ONE goal by ourselves. the other goal ( the goal leading to a draw against Italy) was an own goal. The other team scored on themselves. The majority of soccer players in the US know that the US soccer team doesn't have any potential. That's why we don't support it.

Americans are very competitive so they do not try to understand a sport they think they cannot win and if they have a team in that sport they don't care much about it.
America won the female version of the world cup and I am sure that the same people who do support the men's team will rave about the women. Or is that about beauty on show?

The Americans don't like soccer cos they they don't know soccer. That's why they don't support their team. If I were American, I would support Brazil cos they got the most talented players.

As an American soccer fan I can tell you that the reason is that for so long the US has sucked in soccer so people haven't been that interested. I do think however that thing are improving although this year's performance doesn't help.I think the US is finally catching up.

Americans are too ignorant of the game to understand soccer they don't like to get involved in a game where they know they are not the best, even if it is the most popular sport in the world.

We Americans are too caught up in our version of football, basketball, hockey, etc. In Texas, where I live, soccer is growing in popularity at an incredible rate. It's fun to watch the kids play, but I'm not doing it myself. Football is the religion here, and they are VERY serious about. Maybe we'll get some wins next time and get more serious about the most popular sport in yhe world.
