There's a behemoth of a gray navy transport ship visible from the SF Giants ballpark (AT&T Park). The ship has blue white and red funnels, cranes and what appears to be a ramp at the stern. I'm intrigued to know the name and history of the ship.

if there's a vehicle ramp at he stern, she's painted all over Grey except for the colors on the stack, she's one of the Military Sea Lift Commands fast transports....if she's REALLY big its probably one of the Moore McCormick fast freighters originally designed to carry 700 containers from Japan to West Coast at 30 knots.. taken over by the Navy in the 70's they did most of the heavy hauling for Desert Storm....look up the Sea Lift Command and look for ships with star names..Pollux, Castor, Bellatrix....and that's probably her.......

There are actually two sister ships moored together at Pier 50: the USNS Cape Horn and USNS Cape Hudson. A third sister ship is moored in Alameda next to the USS Hornet. They are all Japanese-Norweigen class roll on roll off ships. They are 749 feet long, 15,000 ton displacement. They don t appear to be very fast at around 18.5 knots, but can carry 6766 ISO containers in 180,000 sq. ft of storage area. They are ROS-5 storage status, meaning they can be ready to sail in just a few days.(10ish). They were delivered for service in the late 70s. They are part of the MSC Pacific Strategic Sealift Force
