The traveling violation occurs when a player, who is in possession of the ball, moves his (or her) feet without bouncing (or "dribbling") the ball at the same time. A player is allowed to lift his heel, but his toes and the ball of his foot must remain fully planted, so that they are only "pivoting" or swiveling around, without moving to another position on the floor.
In the NBA, the traveling rule is probably the rule most frequently violated without being called. Players on the move towards the basket frequently take "extra steps" without being called for it - but the relative freedom to violate the traveling rule is what has changed basketball from the old-time game of "set shot" shooting (standing still) to the more exciting modern game of "driving" and "dunking".

A traveling violation is when a player moves his pivot foot while holding the basketball. After taking possession of the ball, a player is only allowed to move one foot (take one step). However, while on a drive (after dribbling), a player is allowed to take two steps. In this scenario, the first foot that hits the ground after the dribbling stops becomes the pivot foot.
In special cases, such as if you are Lebron James, 3, 4, or even 5 steps are allowed.

Man some peoples answers are just to complicated. Traveling is when you are dribbling, you can be running or walking. Then you just stop dribbling. Then you try to start back after you stop. Just remember once you stop dribbling you have to pass or shoot.
