they love to chew on toilet paper rolls and sticks.... be sure to get an exercise wheel from the pet store if you haven't already. it is important that they exercise and have things to chew on so they don't get fat or have overgrown teeth. i don't know about him laying with his legs open?

I think that the peas would be ok but hamsters hate water when my water bottle dripped on my hamster it went crazy. I found a fun toy at Fleet Farm it's a little cardboard box with a treat inside(it says for gerbils but their no hamster ones so get the gerbil one). In order for your hamster to get the treat they have to chew the cardboard off. My hamsters loved it. At petco they had edible toys like a hut, a snack bar, and a little ramp they can climb up and down. My hamsters also love if I put an empty toilet paper or paper towl roll in their cage they love to climb through it and chew it apart. Hope this helped and good luck!!!

When the hamsters lays down with the legs open does not mean that they are hot, it's natural way of them. Now a home made toy can be a plastic tub that goes across the cage where he can go up and down.

You can freeze small water bottles and refreeze them when they thaw. Put one in his cage. He will lay next to it and cool off. They do this for rabbits too. Just use a bottle(s) that you have used and put tap water in it and freeze. It may make the shavings a little wet but it is worth it. He could die from the heat.

Toys? I know they like cotton stuffing that they can burrow in. Plastic tubing is something they like to crawl through. Don't give him a thin plastic as he will chew on it. Use a piece of PVC pipe. They like those wheels that they can run in but I can't think of how you could make your own. Sorry.

When my children were little, they had a Gerbil named Jeff. We
gave Jeff empty toilet paper and paper towels rolls. He would get very busy chewing on them. He used the tiny pieces of paper to make bedding with it. He would pile the paper into mounds so
big that he would hide inside like a nest. Jeff seemed to love this job. He would work at a fever pace until it was all torn into paper fluff. We also used to give him old pine cones. He would nibble on them until there was only a stump left. We were told that Gerbils needed to have some thing to gnaw on because of their teeth. Pine cones were plentiful always great fun for Jeff. Jeff was a very happy little fellow and we enjoyed watching him at his busy work.

Also, You were worried about your friend being too hot. When we went to the Fair last year, I noticed that some of the Rabbit cages had big liter bottles with frozen water in the cages. They
helped the Rabbits stay cool because the Rabbits would get
close to the bottles. Why don't you try doing the same with
small pop or juice bottles?

Have fun and enjoy your pet.

Spray the hamster with a little water and put a fan near the cage..... as for toys you can go to the local home depot and get a few wood remnants and just put them in the cage...... or build a little box (out of wood) with a hole in it so it can go in and out......They love hiding ...... good luck

Do you have a hamster ball yet? Plastic balls you put your hamster in so he can safely run around the house (make sure he can't get near steps to go down).
