Nowadays they do, especially in radio. Why is it whenever a controversial series comes on broadcast TV, activist groups say that they'll boycott advertisers instead of appealing to the network to take off the series? Because TV and radio stations and networks make their money through the advertising, and if the sponsors aren't happy, then they'll get their way or else they'll take their money elsewhere.

Which is why the FCC regulating decency is such a farce, because the marketplace could do a better job of regulating it than a government agency.
