She said not to but he is a friend and I want to be up front w/him and it is over now.I did not mention we were good friends to start with.

Do you want him to still be your best friend? If so, tell him. If you value this new relationship above ALL else, then that's tougher. Personally, I think the manly thing to do is to let him know.

Not telling a truth does not amount to telling a lie .
Let the past bury the dead . Why on earth you have to do that ?
He is your friend . If you will tell him that his wife cheated on him and
was involved with you , it will not only embarass him but also hurt him .A truth which hurts somebody is worse than a lie . He will not be comfortable with you again .
Whatever has happened has happened . Let the bygones be bygone .
She is his 'ex' now .Why are youstill holding on to it. Dont be a sentimental fool. Dont talk about all this and spoil his present.

There are certain issues in life which are better not raised .

Well, you can kiss the friendship goodby to start with. You also have to be real careful as the guy may think you went behind he's back and would more than likely kick you azz.
