Malaria (Medieval Italian: mala aria — "bad air") and formerly called ague or marsh fever in English, is an infectious disease which causes about 350–500 million infections with humans and approximately 1.3–3 million deaths annually[1] — at least one death every 30 seconds. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 85–90% of these fatalities,[2] the vast majority of which occur in children under the age of 5 years.[3] The death rate is expected to double in the next 20 years.[4] Precise statistics are unknown because many cases occur in rural areas where people do not have access to hospitals and/or the means to afford health care.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, "Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite. Patients with malaria typically are very sick with high fevers, shaking chills, and flu-like illness. Four kinds of malaria parasites can infect humans: Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae.

Infection with any of the malaria species can make a person feel very ill; infection with P. falciparum, if not promptly treated, may be fatal. Although malaria can be a fatal disease, illness and death from malaria are largely preventable."
