Great question...I'm stealing it for debate class. Also, what if it is someone who does not acknowledge the bible (any other religon) do they need to swear on their own text?

Actually, people don't swear on the Bible in court. You just raise your right hand and swear to tell the truth. There's no Bible involved (it's more a movie thing, for effect).

Also, the Ten Commandments can be displayed if they are used as a historical display. If they are displayed in a religious light, rather than historical and/or legal, they are not allowed to be on government property.

You don't have to swear on a bible. They can't make you do that. Courts in modern cities, request that you swear or affirm to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth. The affirmation is to accommodate those whose religion forbids swearing. It comes from a long tradition, meant to encourage folks to tell the truth. There has never been a tradition of posting the 10 commandments (10C's) on the courthouse steps. This is just a fairly recent clever way to intimidate and confuse people. Politicians love it because on the surface they seem right. It diverts attn from real issues. We're smart that we have seen through these shenanigans. I want to raise my kids in my religion at home. I don't want fundamentalist instilling their beliefs on my kids. A monument of the 10C's in the courthouse is not even aesthetically pleasing, it is condescending. It's a sneaky way to get around freedom of religion. I don't need government telling me what the 10C's are. I need government to give justice, balance the budget and stay the heck out of my business. Does covering women in veils from head to toe seem a little out of date to you? Well, these folks wanting to put up the 10C's in front of the courthouse, seem backwards to me in the same fashion.

have not been in court since the 60's have you, while there could always be some court in some area, but any court I know of has not used the bible in years, you merley swear to tell the truth.

And if in a historical display some have the ten commandments included

There is no more swearing on a Bible in court...it is just raising your right hand and swearing to tell the truth.....it's too bad the government feels the need to remove God from everything...especially from stuff so important. The people that argue that the Constitution is so important (ACLU, etc) are the same people who fail to remember that this country was founded on Christian principles.. ie: our money...that says "In God We Trust"....the ACLU would be fine with getting rid of that....but not fine with wire-tapping during a time of war because it invades civil liberties......they are so contradictory.

They did away with the Bible thing years ago. Now you just swear to tell the truth. I think you have been watching too many old TV shows. *giggle*
