Wow! Acer .. there's a name I haven't heard in awhile. It didn't know they were still being made. I used to have a hardware cert on Acer's (among others).
When I was working as a bench tech for a systems integrator, we sold quite a few Acers. However, they were typically considered a second or third tier system. IBM, Apple, and Compaq were 1st tier. But, that was 15 years ago, so they may have worked on their quality and support issues.
As with any manufacturer, you can get a real peach from a questionable company .. and a real lemon from a stellar company.
Personally, I would probably still go with one of the major names based on reputation, interior parts, and service. But, if I needed to stick to a budget, then I might consider some other alternatives and check out what the IT world is saying about other companies in the areas that are important to me.

Based on the NewEgg reviews, the Acer sounds like a good choice.
I always recommend that people really think through a Laptop computer. I suggest that they go to retail stores so they can see it first hand. Try the keyboard, try the monitor, Try the mousepad. For people that never had a laptop, they don't even know what they might want. Lightweight sounds great, but if you can't type on the tiny keyboard, or can't see the screen, why put up with it.
People do like to go with what they know. A Toshiba that you can buy at Wal-Mart or Costco has two great advantages. The first is, if you don't like it, just take it back to the RETAILER. The second is that Toshiba tech support actually answers the phone.
I think that it is great that you can do your own tech support. I is awesome that you can repair a dead battery, instead of activating the warranty. It's great that you can open up the sealed power supply and fix it. But when you do face these sorts of issues, it's darn good that the retailer backs you up, and the manufacturer is there to make it right. But profit margins for many of these small-timers is such, that they can't even answer the phone.

Thats the difference, its because you do your own. You know how many people DO NOT know? When they even have a little mouse trouble, they go nuts. I dont have anything against Acer PCs, but when people have not heard any good reviews about them, then they will stay away from it. For some people, costumer support is the most important to them. If they try to call about a problem, and they get sidetracked or they have difficulty getting a person on the phone, then they will never use that product ever again. I usually get second rated parts because I do my own when it comes to technical support. Unforunately, not many people are as computer apt as some of us are.

I have one and after a year of having it I HATE IT. The sob refuses to start up unless the enter key is mashed. And today it decided to not to fully load windows so another restart and then it still wouldn't run on so another restart .. two hours later it finally turns on. And the keyboard keys that came with this are recessed and flat so I'm marking 50% more typos Oh and the fan is noisy as heck. I had to download a program (speedfan) to turn it down as there are no options in the bios to turn it down. I miss my dell so much. I miss my alien-ware even more. -cry- Acer is the new compact! EWWW.

Here is why I hate acer, and will never buy their products again.
I purchased an Acer Iconia A100 tablet, a referb unit with full 1 year guaranty, after 13 months it died, black screen, won't start. I went to the acer website for info and on their blog are 14 pages of people complaining about this exact same issue with their tablets.
ACER REFUSES TO FIX THEM.
Their website is designed NOT to help you, If the unit is out of warranty the website will not allow you to access support, phone numbers, or email. When I did find a contact number, ACER would not help because it was out of warranty, and as a referb they disown it. I have spent the last 2 weeks getting a runaround trying to get my tablet fixed.
I will never buy an Acer product again.
I now have a Lenovo Yoga Tablet.
