The so-called "Sausage Fly" is actually the reproductive male of a group of African ants called driver ants (Subfamily Dorylinae).

In this group of ants, only the males have wings and fly from their home nest in search of wingless females (queens) from other nests.

They are called sausage flies because their abdomen is enlongated and swollen, filled with sperm. They are the largest form of any ant known.

The other driver ants, that make up the majority of the species, look more like normal ants (although they are eyeless). Some of them have several different sizes of worker ant, and the largest workers often act as specialized soldiers.

Here is a page about them http://antbase.org/ants/africa/clog7.htm

It includes a good picture of the male 'sausage fly' form, as well as pictures of the more typically ant looking workers farther down the page.
