This laptop is about two weeks old. Within the first few days I got it, I installed AOL instant messenger, iTunes, and the Sims 2. I put a few pictures onto the laptop as well as 1 CD on iTunes. Everything was running smoothly. I then, installed Microsoft Office [Word, Outlook, Excell...] and started to have problems with the speed of the computer. It takes almost 10 minutes for the computer to boot up and the sound card when watching movies, TRYING to play the Sims2, etc.... is very delayed. This is very frustrating! What can I do to make the computer run faster?

The first thing I would do is a CTRL ALT DEL and select processes. Look at your CPU usage. If you see something hogging your CPU you know the culprit. If it is an Office application un install office and re install it.

If you see 98 percent or so idle on CPU use then get some anti spyware.

Here is what I would recommend -

You should have Windows Defender. It is free from Microsoft and watches your system prevents programs from taking over your home page etc.

Go here to read about and get it - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security...

Two other free programs you should get & run about once a week are Spybot and Adaware. They also are free and you can get them both here - http://www.download.com/

Between those three you are doing a pretty good job of protecting your system and hopefully that will get it's speed back on track.

Technical Specifications please
Operating Systems
Processors
Chipset
Memory
Graphics
from my point of view laptops r slower than the PC. Because laptop have less memory and their processors are slow.
please lit the speed and memory and hard drive size then i can tell why it slo or try turning of the program running in the back ground.To start the System Configuration utility, click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK. and click on startup and uncheck the ones u dont need. ok

You didn't said if you bought your laptop with software already installed..but i bet you did!! and i bet you have there a sistem restore directory.If is true what i said before.....Usually, in our days the sellers(stores) sell computers(laptops) with an operating system already installed and they also add a lot of trash there..like programs/software that you dont really need and most of it it's in trial version and then you have to pay for full version..all this trash make you computer running slow in time.Now my advice:
1.get rid of AOL messenger/email..no offence but they have lots of advare and ads on their pages;
2.find somebody -if you can't handle it ;and format your hard disk-in other words delete everything thats it on your computer right now;
3.then create partitions on your hard drive-one for OS and the rest for your stuff;
4.install a fresh copy of windows(if you use win and you have a OS CD or copy) and then after you are done install only software you need!!!
5.and from time to time its good to do a defragmentation

First things first, De fragment your hard drive. Every week run an anti spy ware program, like Spy Sweeper, by Webroot. You should do a disc clean up, about once a week, as well. If none of the above works, then you might need more memory.

Delete you internet cookies, etc. make sure trash is emptied. Think twice about what you load on. Also AOL sucks, I have heard a lot of bad things. Try People Pc. It almost seems like you may have a virus or a faulty processor or something.

Did you defrag? Try defragmentation, installing MS Office add a considerable amount of memory and therefore may need to be organized...just a suggestion here lol I'm not an expert or anything. usually helps a little bit.

what is the specs of your laptop? how much is the ram? how many MB, i mean? usually if it's only 256MB and put too many stuff inside you'll experience hard start. check your hard disk status in your my computer if you open your laptop, if the status shows that remaining GB left is less then that could one of the reason. if i were you don't install applications or any programs you don't need... or maybe spywares, adwares or simply virus are lurking inside. or try to visit trend micro housecall it's free!!

Defrag your system,
go to start
control panel
performance and maintance
rearrange items on your hard disk

this should be done after you download new programs or every couple of weeks

Something that I tried with my computer when it was running slow was to defragment it. it takes some time to do if you have alot of files like i do but it did wonders for me. unfortunately i can tell you how to do it.
