Marriage isn't really about monogamy except in the vows. The marriage itself is the contract for the day to day work it takes for two people to get through life in general, raise the kids, feed the dog, etc. Sometimes people make mistakes. Sometimes a lot of mistakes. Forgiving and moving on are the real maturity issues. If the problem goes away, it is a good choice. If it continues, then the victim has to decide if they can tolerate it or not. It's not really up to outsiders to judge this contract unless there is a real danger to someone.

Yes there is something mentally wrong, It is called insecurity. For some reason the woman feels she can do no better, she insists for the sake of the family she must keep him around, excuses and a serious lack of self esteem is what she carries around. Once a man has a long term affair and is not held accountable by his wife he will continue to use her mental illness.

Usually it's for their kids. They don't want their kids crying for daddy and missing him all the time when they see him only every other weekend. It's hard being a single mom. Most take them back out of desperation, not really having many options.
