the doctor will first examine the external parts of your vagina and make sure everything has developed normal and is okay. The doctor will then see if it is possible to insert a speculum so it is possible to see inside the vagina and examine and to make sure that it is normal. The doctor will also place one or two fingers inside your vagina and one hand on your abdomen. This allows the doctor to feel your ovaries and your uterus and to examine them and to make sure they are normal size and have developed appropriately also. Do not hesitate to ask any questions or to address any concerns during the examination.
The table for female examinations has stirrups at the end of it. These are for you to place your feet in while the doctor examines your vagina and female organs. These make it much less uncomfortable for you during the exam, and helps the doctor to better examine you.
A Pap smear is something that sometimes is done on an examination. A speculum is inserted so that the doctor can see the cervix, which is the opening into the womb. This is a place where at a later age lesions may develop and a Pap smear helps to detect those long before there’s any problems and while it is very easy to treat and get rid of them.
The doctor inserts a small wooden spatula or other device and simply scrapes some of the superficial cells off the skin of the cervix. This is usually not painful. If you experience any pain it is important that you tell your doctor.
The doctor then places the cells on a microscopic slide and then uses a special liquid to preserve the cells so they can be examined and studied at a later time.
A pathologist is a specialized doctor who examines the slides after they have been prepared for the microscope.
Cells from this region of the body have a special characteristic in that many years before they may turn into a cancer they show changes that tell the pathologist that they will become abnormal at a later time. The importance is that if the pathologist detects some changes that may cause problems in the future they can let your doctor know, and it can be simply treated so as to prevent any problems with cancer in the future.
After this the doctor will tell you what she found on the examination. He will answer your questions, and may give you some medical advice or recommend a contraception method and give you a prescription. (This can be taken to your pharmacy and you can purchase the medicine.)
He will propose a time for you to come back to see her, and make sure you ask any questions you have before you leave.
Your doctor will talk to you about STD's and contraceptives.

First of all, you may feel more comfortable seeing a woman gynecologist as I did the first time I went for a pelvic exam. I figured that since she has the same parts I do, she would understand my body and what I was going through much better than a man. Call me sexist, I don't care!
There is a great website to check out - www.myfirstvisit.org/ that will give you all the info and answer all the scary questions you might have and will prepare you for your first visit.
Seeing a gynecologist regularly is an important and smart thing for a woman to do to keep healthy, as there are sometimes problems internally that have no symptoms for a long time that you know nothing about until things get very serious. Now THAT is scary!
Once you have been there once, I promise you that it gets much easier to go, and it is important to feel comfortable and trust your doctor. If after the second or third visit you still do not, look for another doctor. I have had my woman gynecologist for almost 30 years! Good luck!

First of all...you can choose a male or female gynecologist, whatever makes you comfortable. Once you're there, you'll fill out a form and they'll ask you about your last period and if you've had sex before and if so, the last time you had sex. Then the doctor will conduct a pap smear. This checks for any STD's, HIV/AIDS, just anything wrong in general. They also do a breast exam, a vaginal exam. Ask all the questions you want and they let you know everything once its done. Its not the best thing to do but you have to do it.
Hope this helps!

It can be scary to go for the first time. I go to a woman gynecologist. You may be able to find one in your area. If not, ask if they have a female nurse practitioner who can do your exam. Ask your mom to go with you. She can sit in the waiting room while you have your exam. You will have to get undressed. They will give you a paper gown and sheet so that you are covered. When the doctor examines you there will be a nurse in the room, too. The doctor will examine your breasts and teach you how to do a self-breast examine (which you should do once a month). Especially if they know this is your first time they will be sure to explain everything to you before they do it. To do your pelvic exam your feet will be in stirrups. The doctor will insert a speculum into your vagina and take samples of your cervix. It might be a bit uncomfortable but it shouldn't hurt. The doctor should discuss your periods with you and also birth control methods. No woman I know likes having to go, but we know that it is a necessary part of keeping ourselves healthy. God bless!

It's not unusual to be a little nervous about your first visit to an OB/Gyn, but it is nothing to worry about and it is necessary for your health. But first, there are plenty of very well qualified WOMEN gynecologists, and there is nothing wrong with you requesting one if it will make you more comfortable. And second, you should always tell your gynecologist when you are having your first pelvic exam, so they know to go slowly and explain everything they are doing for your comfort and education.
Taking charge of your health, taking good care of yourself in all ways, and educating yourself about how to do that is a GOOD THING. Good for you for taking the first steps!

Being nervous is understandable and totally normal. Going to a gynecologist can be unsettling your first time. Just take a deep breath and realize that its just a part of womanhood that we have to go through. There are just a couple of procedures and it go quickly. Most gynecologists are gentle and understanding. Take care of yourself.
