Every time I feed my little one she immediately begins playing with her food. What is it about the human psyche that must indulge itself and pretend to eat something that is "alive" or animated? What kind of "animalistic" instincts are those, if you rather go that way?

For kids, it's all about exploring their environment and, most of the time, that means playing with anything and everything that they come into contact with. Yes, even their food. If it's the messiness that bothers you, get her a good high chair or booster seat with a tray and place a plastic tablecloth on the floor underneath her. Eventually, as her motor skills improve and food isn't "fun" anymore, she'll start being a little more neat with her food.

Both of my kids never played with their food. Must be my immediate reaction to something I won't tolerate. I don't leave food in front of them, if I realize they are not interested in it. In my native country food was scarce and not something to play with. You sit down at the table - go for it, if you are hungry ...otherwise you can excuse yourself. I don't ever force my kids to pretend to like something they don't want. My kids are typical boys... very playful...I'm sure they would have played with their food, too if they were given the chance.

Children learn through play. They play with their food not only because its fun, but to learn about their world. They test their limits and the limits of those who take care of them. Its totally normal. All I can tell you is be ready with the camera and enjoy her while she is still little, they grow up way too fast.

Children like fun things. You did not say anything about your child age, but children have to be motivated in everything they do, when they take a bath , cleaning up mess, when they going to bed, they don't know better. You have to be patiente and learn that children like to prased and motivated in everything, otherwise, you will have a sad looking child.

Small kids play with everything that they come in contact with. It is their way of exploring their world and discovering how things work. Food has interesting color and texture, if not taste, and your reaction to their play can be entertainment in itself - for them.

start giving your child smaller portions. adults feed their children way to much. think about how much kids are expected to eat. 3 meals and snacks. then think about what you eat, uaully when you are hungry.
