In the academic sense, research is finding out all you can about a topic for a paper. You would use books, newspaper/magazine articles, and the web (though most teachers/professors don't want the majority of the research to be done only on the web).

To do a research is to look for different sources about a topic that you are going to even talk or writte about it.
