the reason that tanning beds are so bad for you is that they produce an extreamly concentrated stream of UV light which is what is what tans you..you are effectivley cooking yourself, hence the brown colour. Think chicken in the oven. UV light is also naturally produced by the sun. Everyone knows that being in the sun withut some form of sun screen on is bad as the uv rays from it are harmful and can cause cancer and other skin degenerative disorders. With sun beds producing a more intense and direct stream of UV to your body that damage is even more likely. Frequent tanning will age your skin more rapidly too, killing skin cells, and thickening your skin so it goes elephant like. Not very attractive!..the light if you are not careful can damage your eyes.

tanning beds and the sun are both equally dangerous, but with a tanning bed you can adjust your tanning times carefully to avoid burning outright. A tan does not come from burning of the skin contrary to what people think. UVA and UVB rays increase production of melanin in your skin resulting in the dark brown color. Getting burnt frequently damages the skin and makes it susceptible to cancer. That's why I believe it is more dangerous to tan from the sun, because you have no control over the intensity of the suns rays or the length of exposure, which means you have more of a chance of getting fried.

Bulbs in tanning beds contain UVA rays that cause aging. Close contact with UVA rays can cause extensive skin damage (especially for individuals with light skin) as well as lead to skin cancer. Fair skinned individuals contain less pigment making cells which not only give the skin its color but also protects the skin from damage. UVA rays can destroy the small amt of pigment cells fair-skinned people have causing wrinkly and leathery skin. Google american academy of dermatology website for more info.

The body is getting hit with a type of radiation that causes burns to the skin. Think about it.

Radiation burns to the skin can cause skin & organ mutations and accelerated cell growth.
