Hey I understand what ya mean about friends and fam! But look on the other hand if you became a singer in a big band or so on .. i bet most of them would be on line with a back stage pass ,and bragging to let everyone know that your there friend/ sister /brother / and so on .????
if you have a love for it and think you can sing then go for it .. go get some singing lesions that Will give you the heads up . on weather of not your on the right path ,, you might think your good now .. and you know what you know in the sense of singing ,, now you go to a pro that opens some doors and teaches you the right way and technique's ,, now you even sound better ,, im just saying ya never know till you try ,, and if you dont you will always say (i should went to try out or go for lessons

If you're afraid of friends and family then don't bother. Assuming you have a voice the largest part of singing is self confidence and the ability to sing in front of a group of people. The first group of people you probably end up singing in front of is family and friends. First believe in yourself and go a persue your dream, then see where the cards fall. If you don't try, then you'll never know and that will become a lifelong regret.

if you are afraid of friends and families reactions.. then I don't see how you would make a whole career out of singing... remember a career of singing would mean you would have to preform for many people, many people may judge your songs, voice, style, etc. you need to have confidence in yourself first!
try going to voice lessons if you haven't already.. this will give you confidence and improve your voice as well... it will also show your friends and family you are serious about singing and they will probably support you
then try joining anything you can at your school or around the city that has to do with singing and try out for solos..

look up in your local yellowpages for a music coach, or perhaps join a local choir, contact a local radio station and ask if you could record some of your singing on their equipment for about 15 minutes or so, then stick on a website.
