Get them a PSP, it's a bit over the price range but an awesome game system. Of course, if you're not interested in buying video games... just give them the money. Children these days are understanding the value of money at a much earlier age. I have a nephew that was trying to get money out of me when he was 5... and not a dollar here and there... I'm talking big money... little crook.

If it's a girl:
Clothes, Gift Cards, Purse with Jewelry, Digital Camera, Expensive Shoes, and just plain Cash. (Video Games...there are girls ones)

If it's a boy:
Video games, Cash, Gift Cards, Clothes, Digital Camera, and expensive shoes.

If I were you I would go ahead with a Simon Gift card! It's like a visa, but has a controlled expense. You can allow the 12 year old to decide what he/she wants.

HIH! (Hope I helped)

I don't know where this kid lives, but an Audubon or Petersen's Guide to Wildflowers or edible plants [ :) ] or something might interest him or her. There are types made for children, but the nice, thick kind, about twenty dollars, is more comprehensive and will make the kid think you trust him or her. Also could start a new, healthy hobby.

Give them the cash, then you can teach them about being responsible with such a large sum of money (well, for them anyways) and how to save it or spend it wisely.

Or, if its a 12 year old boy, you could buy him something like a BB gun or a paintball gun or something that involves shooting.

a FULL WEEKEND of unconditional attention from his/her parent. It would be the most memorable present ever recieved.

Theme park, walks, playing catch, movie ... whatever is available in your area.
