Some of these items won't need to be used for a while (hopefully never), but sooner or later it would be a good idea to have them:

tiny bandaids
ear thermometer
syrup of ipecac
activated charcoal
bacitracin
rubbing alcohol
solarcaine
calamine lotion
infant's Tylenol & Motrin
non-sting antiseptic wipes
Little Tummys (yes, I believe they spell it incorrectly) - to help a toddler go poop sometimes!!
Little Noses
Baby Orajel (doesn't work on all babies)
cotton balls
ice pack

If I think of anything else, I'll post it...

just to let you know, if you get any Tylenol or Motrin for the medicine cabinet get a paper from the baby's pediatrician at the first visit with a dosing chart on it that goes by weight and not by age. the age chart that Tylenol uses is not right. my son had a seizure because he didn't get the right dosage of Tylenol for a fever. keep the chart in the cabinet with the Tylenol.

The only thing in my baby medicine chest is Liquid Tylenol, baby oragel, Vitamin D drops, liquid Iron supplements, a digital thermometer and the directions on how to use the medicine safely.

If you are going to be breastfeeding, your baby will need the Vitamin D until 6 months. Formula fed baby's don't need the drops because of the amount of vit D in it. The Iron is only necessary if the doctor recommends it. The thermometer is good for peace of mind. Take the temp from the armpit, swap thermometer with alcohol after each use. As the baby grows, you can use it orally. The liquid Tylenol is great for fevers as well as teething pains. Dip a clean q-tip into the liquid and rub onto gums. The baby oragel is also for teething. Use with caution and sparingly as it can numb baby's throat which can lead to choking until it wears off.

One item you should not keep anywhere near an infant or young child. is Iron supplements. They are lethal to young chlidren. That includes vitamines with iron in them.
Please note that the words ferrous and ferric mean iron. For example, "ferric gluconate".
Why? lethal only in children? because too much iron is toxic. And the chemicals that are used to pull iron out of the body, (chelating compounds like, EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid), and others, canNOT be given to children. They are also toxic.
Keep your multivitamines under lock. By all means use them if you need them, but don't let the young get near them.
Best wishes. Children a lot of work but a great joy and enormous potential.

A newborn can't have motrin or tylenol unless your doctor tells you to give it to him/her. I didn't know this until my baby was crying from gas (for 3 hours - she was allergic to her formula) & I called my pediatrician at 4 a.m. to double check on the baby tylenol. I wasn't allowed to give her any pain reliever until she was 3 months old.

I'd make sure you have a nasal aspirator, thermometer & mylicon. Mylicon is wonderful - it's drops for gas.
